Climate Victory Gardens

How do Climate Victory Gardens help reverse climate change?

When we burn fossil fuels (gasoline, heating fuels, etc), cut down trees, or till soils for agriculture, we free carbon that has been stored in the soil for long periods of time and release it into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change.

Plants use carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere to make their stems, leaves, and roots. Long-lived plants hold carbon for decades or even centuries. Annual root die-back is the main source of carbon captured in the soil. Undisturbed soil will hold carbon in organic matter for millennia.

New research demonstrates that pairing legumes and warm-season grasses will dramatically boost carbon storage in the soil. Based on these findings, Climate Victory Garden Kits let you effectively fight climate change in your own yard.

Optimal conditions include a minumum of 6 hours of sunlight/day and regular watering for the first 2 years.

Why are they called Climate Victory Gardens?

During World War II, citizens cultivated Victory Gardens, growing their food as a personal and visible way to support the war effort. Now we need a similar effort to fight the increasing impact of global climate change. Climate Victory Gardens are designed to add beauty to your yard while helping the environment.
